Last Day in Changsha

July 20, 2007

I am so ready to move on to Guangzhou. Not that I haven’t enjoyed being in Changsha, but I am ready to bring Xiang Yi home and be with my family again. I am tired and worn out right now, and I hope that a change of scenery will help.

Last night a lady from housekeeping knocked on our room door at 11:30 pm wanting to know if I needed another pillow!? I opened the door with a, “are you kidding look” and shut the door. It startled me so, and made me so mad, that I didn’t sleep the rest of the night. Fortunately, it didn’t wake up Xiang Yi.

Peter came to our room this morning and volunteered to translate the Half the Sky album for us. It was so neat to see some of Xiang Yi’s personality through these reports. One of the pieces of paper that Xiang Yi had drawn on, the teacher wrote on the drawing what Xiang Yi said the drawing was about. It showed a picture of a house that was on fire and villagers trying to put out the fire, but the rain came and helped to put it out. I couldn’t help but wonder if she witnessed this when she lived with her first family. I hope that one day we will be able to talk about what she remembers about them.

At nap-time today Xiang Yi wanted a piece of hard candy to eat in bed. I told her no and asked her to give me the candy and she could have it after her nap. She wouldn’t, so I took it from her. She had a meltdown that last 15 minutes, and the only thing that finally calmed her down, was me singing rock a bye baby. She then laid down for a nap, but I could tell she was not happy with me. After naptime she woke up, and after a bit, was fine.

We are getting ready to check out of the hotel and pick up her passport and the adoption registration certificate. I am hoping that her first flight goes smoothly. We won’t get into Guangzhou until late in the evening, and tomorrow morning we have her medical appointment that is required to leave China.

I want to thank you all for your thoughtful emails and comments. It has been so nice to hear from everyone. Please continue to pray for us.

Have a wonderful day, Michelle and Xiang Yi

You are doing so well with her and we will continue to pray. You're doing a great job setting limits with her. Let us know if there is anything specific we can pray for!

Michelle, if two people are living two dramatically different lives right now, it's you and me. I'm getting ready to get Alex into her evening gown, and you're pulling hard candy out of your daughter's mouth!!! Two sides of the world. Amazing. Can't help but thinking that you'll be here one day with one of those beautiful daughters!!! I'll save the dress. We love you both and I'm counting down the days to see you guys. God Bless.

Dear Xiang Yi, Get ready for a fun airplane ride in the sky!
I have enjoyed seeing your pictures every day but I wish I had some pictures of you with your new mom and dad! I've been to that hotel, before and I recognize the fountain!
Love and hope to see you soon,
